Title :

Inflammation-related depression: from symptoms dimensions to molecular biomarkers

Abstract

Depression is the most common of mental disorders, representing the leading chronic condition and the first cause of years lived with disability. Mounting evidence suggests intricate bidirectional relationship between adiposity and depression, which may explain their similar and parallel growth. In the past decades, inflammation was revealed to be a key mediator of the relationship between adiposity and depression. The Nutripsy team has largely contributed to show that obesity and even obesogenic dietary habits are characterized by a low-grade inflammation that renders individuals vulnerable to neuropsychiatric symptoms. In this lecture, I will summarize recent clinical data from Nutripsy team reporting on detailed neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with inflammatory status according to obesity severity grades, the relative contribution of metabolic health and inflammation to depressive symptoms and the relationships of depressive symptoms with tryptophan metabolism. Then, I will present the results of a transcriptomic study comparing depressed and non-depressed obese subjects analyzed before and after a bariatric surgery revealing molecular pathways predictors of depressive symptoms intensity and of remission. This research programs aim to promote precision nutritional medicine applied to mental health, in a context where the efficacy of standard treatments remains mitigated.

Biosketch

Marie-Pierre Moisan defended her PhD in 1992 at the university of Ediburgh, UK.  Her work was dedicated on the role of 11 beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase in the brain, an enzyme regenerating glucocorticoids from their inactive metabolite. She then did her postdoctoral research at Duke university (USA) where she focused on SF-1, a transcription factor critical for steroidogenesis . She secured a researcher position at INRA in the laboratory INSERM of Prof. Le Moal (Bordeaux, France) in 1993 to develop a project on the genetics of stress responses. In 2005 she spent one year at the University of Queensland, Australia where she worked on the regulation of the growth hormone receptor in obesity. Since her return to Bordeaux, she has been working at the laboratory Nutrineuro (Bordeaux, France) where she developed several lines of research aimed at understanding the interaction between nutrition, glucocorticoids and memory or depression. She has developed experimental approaches in preclinical models ranging from molecular analyses to behavioral assessments as well as clinical studies focusing on molecular biomarkers related to the role of glucocorticoid hormones. She is currently a INRAe research director and she is the co-leader of the Nutripsy team at Nutrineuro.
