Type 1 diabetes is by far the most common in children. In 2004, its incidence was
13 to 14 new cases per 100 000 children each year and is progressing every year
by more than 3%. This increase in incidence is affecting younger children. More
than one quarter of children diagnosed in France are under the age of 5. The
disease is still, in more than 40% of cases, first diagnosed as a result of an
episode of ketoacidosis.
