Chair in « Physiopathology of memory »

The university of Bordeaux has opened the recruitment of young lecturer-researchers. One is at Bordeaux Neurocampus with a profile in Physiopathology of memory.

The call for applications is open from 8 January 2021 at 14:00 to 22 February 2021 at 12:00 and is accessible at the following address: https://aap.u-bordeaux.fr.

Eligibility criteria

Eligible candidates are researchers meeting the following criteria:
– Two to six years of international experience (mainly PhD and post‐doctorate). This period may be extended to a maximum of eight years upon duly justified request (maternity/paternity leave, career interruption, etc.) prior to application;
– Outstanding scientific record (publications, patents, etc.);
– Two years of international (minimum) experience (doctoral, post‐doctoral level). In the case of a candidate already in Bordeaux laboratories, he or she must have been at the Bordeaux site for less than 18 months ;
– Applicants must be supported by a local host laboratory and an education unit from the University of Bordeaux.

Research profile

Research profile title: Pathophysiology of Memory

Research department: Bordeaux Neurocampus

Laboratory: One of the teams from the Bordeaux Neurocampus Department working on memory mechanisms.

Description of the research project:

The successful candidate will join one of the Bordeaux Neurocampus labelled teams with a project relating to the « Brain, cognition and behavior » research axis. His/her activity will also be part of the GPR « Memory » projects carried out by the department (currently under evaluation). More specifically, he/she will work in the field of memory, cognitive and behavioral neurosciences and will have skills in modern approaches to neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and connectomics. The project will aim to specify, at different levels of analysis, the neurophysiological and/or pathophysiological mechanisms of memory in these various forms. It is hoped that the project will give an essential part to animal experimentation, using techniques of manipulation and visualization of cellular activity (optogenetics, cell and/or functional imaging), analysis of circuits by modern tracing approaches (connectomics) combined with electrophysiology and/or targeted genetic manipulations. The project could focus on very fundamental memory functioning mechanisms or preclinical studies using animal models, in the field of memory disorders, in particular of neurodevelopmental origin.

Expected competences:
Molecular and cellular neurobiology, Behavior, memory

Expected scientific impact:
The chairholder will have to take on responsibilities within his/her host laboratory by coordinating his/her own projects and eventually considering taking responsibility for a research team.

Education profile

Title of the training profile: Neurosciences

Assignment component: College of Science et Technology

Course compoment: Education unit of Biology

Pedagogical profile: Training courses concerned: Life Sciences Bachelor; Master in Neurosciences; Bachelor of Psychology

Pedagogical objectives and need for supervision:

The recruited person will join the neuroscience teaching team to participate in the bachelor’s and master’s classes. He/she must have solid knowledge in cognitive and behavioral neurosciences to ensure these teachings in the neuroscience master and the life science bachelor programs. He/she will be involved in the international Master, and therefore should be able to teach in English and be trained in innovative teaching techniques. On the other hand, he/she will participate in the reflection on the new model of the master program. He/she will be asked to offer teaching linking cognitive neurosciences to circuits’ analysis by modern approaches of neuroanatomy (connectomics) and neuron circuit analysis (optogenetics, pharmacogenetics, etc.). In this context, a teaching unit will be proposed for the new accreditation, which will link the study of neuronal circuits at the cellular level to certain cognitive processes and behavior. On a larger scale, the teaching team wishes to consolidate longitudinal teaching of behavioral and cognitive neurosciences linking a total of six teaching units, from bachelor (L3) to master (M1 and M2 in 3 courses) levels. We will appreciate experience in using innovative teaching techniques (such as distance learning and participative teaching) and internationalization (many teachings of the master of neuroscience are in English). Finally, these skills may enable him/her to participate in the teaching of behavioral neurosciences, particularly in social sciences or cognitive sciences.

About recruitment

This scheme aims to facilitate the recruitment of young lecturer-researchers on the basis of job profiles pre-identified by the institution in emerging and highly multidisciplinary disciplines or where there are strong international stakes. The scheme is part of a talent management policy shared with partner institutions, particularly research organizations. Synergies with the systems of these organizations, whether ATIP-Avenir or « Inria Starting Faculty Position », will be sought.

Duration

The chair will be funded for a period between three and five years maximum. The chairholder will be first recruited on a fixed-term contract as a lecturer-researcher during which his or her work is monitored and evaluated (evaluation at 3 years and then at the end of the chair). If the evaluations are successful, the University of Bordeaux will then publish a statutory position. This recruitment will be carried out via the traditional competitive procedure.

Funding

The funding will cover the salary of the project leader for a maximum of 5 years (3-year fixed-term contract renewable for 2 years after evaluation; or 3 years + 1 year, 2 years + 2 years; 2 years + 1 year depending on the situation). In addition, as this is an attractiveness scheme targeting the teaching and research profession, a teaching service with a minimum of 64 hours/year may be requested.

Project-related costs such as running costs, equipment and for the recruitment of staff dedicated to the project, may complete the Chair’s budget. This can be done either within the framework of this program or within the framework of external funding (regional chair, Atip Avenir), depending on the recruitment situation.

The main stages of this scheme are explained below:
