The efficient activity of the nervous system and higher brain functions could not be understood without considering the crucial role of glial cells: astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and microglia. Moreover, increasing examples of the diversity of pathophysiological roles of glial cells is starting to be underscored owing to new methodological advances and state-of-the-art-techniques. Attending students will have the opportunity to learn and become familiar with advanced techniques to manipulate, visualize and study glial cell functions in health and disease. Selected students will develop an experimental training project devoted to the study of the electrophysiological communication between neurons and astrocytes (tripartite synapse), or the glial cell responses of microglia and oligodendrocyte progenitor cells to acute injury. This advanced course includes theoretical and methodological lessons during morning sessions by reputed experts in order to provide students with a global view of the field and the opportunity for active discussion of glial research frontlines.
