On pensait traditionnellement que la neurogen\u00e8se ne se produisait que pendant les stades embryonnaires dans le cerveau des mammif\u00e8res. Cependant, au cours des 30 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, la recherche a fermement \u00e9tabli que la neurogen\u00e8se active se poursuit \u00e9galement tout au long de la vie adulte dans des zones discr\u00e8tes, dont le gyrus dent\u00e9 (GD) de l&#8217;hippocampe. En fait, cette structure a la particularit\u00e9 de pr\u00e9senter un d\u00e9veloppement prolong\u00e9 : les neurones granulaires (NGs) du GD sont g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9s depuis la fin de la p\u00e9riode embryonnaire jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e2ge adulte et la s\u00e9nescence avec un pic maximal pendant la p\u00e9riode n\u00e9onatale. Cette addition continue de NGs et l&#8217;h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e9n\u00e9it\u00e9 r\u00e9sultante du GD nous am\u00e8ne \u00e0 proposer que l&#8217;origine temporelle des NGs dicte leurs propri\u00e9t\u00e9s, leur fonction et leur implication dans les maladies mentales.
