DESCRIPTION:Venue: BBS \n\nKyriaki Sidiropoulou \n \nProfessor of Neurophysiology\nDepartment of Biology at the University of Crete \nInvited by Mathieu Wolff (INCIA) \nTitle\nThe role of prefrontal cortex development in the emergence of cognitive symptoms in schizophrenia: Insights from the MAM mouse model \nAbstract\nThe prefrontal cortex is characterized by protracted development that lasts until adulthood. My lab has contributed to this by investigating the intrinsic and synaptic properties of PFC pyramidal neurons and GABAergic interneurons from the neonatal stage to adulthood\, along with investigations of cognitive function that depends on the prefrontal cortex. We have identified that intrinsic properties of pyramidal neurons primarily mature in the first 3 postnatal weeks\, the intrinsic properties of parvalbumin and somatostatin interneurons continue their maturation to adolescence while the synaptic properties\, excitatory and inhibitory\, continue to change until adulthood. Given this developmental scaffold for PFC neural circuit properties\, we investigate the adaptations of PFC synaptic properties in animal models of schizophrenia throughout development and test developmental specific interventions that allow for rescue of cognitive deficits. In the talk\, I will also refer to recent synergies with the group of Mathieu Wolff. \nBioscketch\nKyriaki Sidiropoulou is a Professor of Neurophysiology in the Department of Biology at the University of Crete\, a collaborating researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the Foundation for Research and Technology–Hellas (IMBB-FORTH)\, and the Director of the Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Neurosciences. She leads the Neurophysiology and Behavior Laboratory\, where her team uses a multidisciplinary approach—including behavioral assays\, electrophysiology\, histology\, and computational modeling—to investigate the cellular mechanisms underlying cognitive processes\, such as working memory\, temporal memory\, cognitive flexibility and social behavior\, in both control mice and mouse models of neuropsychiatric disorders. She is a member of the European Dana Alliance for the Brain and has served the Hellenic Society for Neuroscience as President\, General Secretary\, and Treasurer and the European Brain and Behavior Society (EBBS) as an ordinary member fo the Executive Committee.\n
