SUMMARY:Course: Basic Neuroscience of Movement Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Misfolding of alpha-synuclein and tau protein: from basic mechanisms to therapeutic development\nCourse Directors\nErwan Bezard\, PhD\, Wassilios Meissner\, MD\, PhD \nFaculty\nLaura Parkkinen\, PhD\nThiago Outeiro\, PhD\nMaria Grazia Spillantini\, FMedSci\, FRS\nMorvane Colin\, PhD\nGünter Höglinger\, MD\, PhD \nCourse Description\nThe overall aim of the course is to teach the fundamental mechanisms underlying aggregation and propagation of a-synuclein and tau protein in neurodegenerative movement disorders. Ongoing efforts for the development of therapeutic strategies targeting these two proteins will also be discussed. The course consists of seven virtual lectures given by international experts in the field\, followed by an interactive Q&A session to answer the questions of the participants. The course will close with an interactive panel discussion including all experts to address the critical next steps to move the field forward. \nThe course is part of a broader effort of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society to engage young neurologists and neuroscientists into research on movement disorders and promote translational research involving multidisciplinary approaches. \nInteractive Components\nReal Time Question and Answer Session (30 minutes) and Real Time Discussion on Critical Next Steps to Move the Field Forward \nTarget Audience\nYoung Neurologists and Young Scientists \nLearning Objectives\n\nDescribe the prototypical neuropathological lesions observed in synucleinopathies and tauopathies\nRecognize the complex mechanisms underlying pathological aggregation of a-synuclein and tau protein\nDebate the putative role of distinct a-synuclein and tau species/strains for disease phenotypes and progression\nDiscuss ongoing efforts towards the development of therapies targeting a-synuclein or tau protein\n\nProgram\nLectures and discussion begin September 30 at 14:00 CEST \n\n\n\n Welcome and Course Introduction\n Erwan Bezard and Wassilios Meissner\n\n\n Neuropathology in Synucleinopathies and Tauopathies\n Laura Parkkinen\n\n\n Mechanisms Underlying Protein Aggregation in Synucleinopathies\n Tiago Outeiro\n\n\n Mechanisms Underlying Protein Aggregation in Tauopathies\nMaria Grazia Spillantini\n\n\n Propagation of α-synucleinopathy\n Erwan Bezard\n\n\n Spreading of Tauopathies\n Morvane Colin\n\n\n Therapeutic Strategies Targeting α-synuclein: From Bench to Bed\n Wassilios Meissner\n\n\n Therapeutic Strategies Targeting Tau Protein: From Bench to Bed\n Günther Höglinger\n\n\n Interactive Question and Answer Session\n All Faculty\n\n\n Critical Next Steps to Move the Field Forward\n Discussion between faculty and participants\n\n\n Concluding Remarks\n Erwan Bezard and Wassilios Meissner\n\n\n\nRegister\nhttps://mds.execinc.com/edibo/BASIC20VIR?_ga=2.12052733.81843017.1600070485-1980107551.1598961072 \nWebsite\nhttps://www.movementdisorders.org/ \n
