Abstract :

 In order to adapt to a constantly changing environment, we need to alter our behavior according to changes in reward prospects.
I am interested in the way flexible behavior (e.g. task switching and the subsequent response) is modulated by reward motivation, in particular howthe brain accommodates the integration of these three processes, which depend on three anatomically distinct cortico-striatal circuits (motivation: orbitofrontal cortex - ventral striatum;cognition: dorsolateral prefrontal cortex – dorsomedial striatum; response: premotor cortex – dorsolateral striatum).

For reward information to affect adaptive behavior, these circuits should somehow interact. One potential mechanism by which information in the motivation circuitry modulates processing in the cognitive circuitry is via spiraling dopamine connections between the striatum and the midbrain. However, functional evidence in support of this anatomical model, especially in humans, is sparse.

My work aims to functionally test the role of integrated cortico-striatal circuits and the role of dopamine in the translation of reward into flexible cognitive behavior. First, we studied the integration of these functions using pharmacological manipulations in healthy subjects and in populations that have been associated with deficits in the dopamine system. We alsoassessedthe role of cortico-striatal circuits in the integration of these functions by combining non-invasive brain stimulationwith functional MRI. Finally, we developed a novel rodent paradigm which parallels the paradigm used in humans.
