Séminaire impromptu - Ebenezer N. Yamoah The physical qualities of hair cells and auditory neurons that determine their fast temporal processing.

Abstract :

The auditory system is renowned for the precise timing and speed of information processing. Using structural and functional strategies, I will discuss how the auditory system employ a constellation of voltage-gated ionic currents in spiral ganglion neurons and hair cells to define these distinct features of the auditory system. In particular, I will demonstrate that there is a placed-map of voltage-gated ion channels along the length of the primary auditory neuron and hair cells, and the precise localization of individual subtypes of the channels is paramount to the remarkable physical qualities of the auditory system.
