Séminaire impromptu - Ruth BarrientosAcute high-fat diet consumption is a vulnerability factor for memory decline

Abstract :

Dr Barrientos will show evidence that acute consumption of a high-fat diet elevates corticosterone,
thus priming the hippocampus to produce a potentiated neuroinflammatory response to a mild immune challenge, causing memory deficits in young adult rats.

Research overview
Dr. Barrientos's research focuses on memory declines following challenges that are associated with a neuroinflammatory response (e.g., E. coli infection, surgery, or high-fat diet) particularly in the normal aging population. Her work examines mechanisms that are involved in these declines, and therapeutic interventions aimed at mitigating these declines.
