epetitive activation of presynaptic glutamatergic fibers that commonly triggers LTP at excitatory synapses also induces LTD at hippocampal inhibitory synapses via retrograde endocannabinoid signaling, a phenomenon that we call I-LTD. We have recently found that I-LTD is highly localized within the dendritic compartment of pyramidal cells, and can also occur independently of long-term plasticity at excitatory synapses. By decreasing dendritic inhibition, endocannabinoids enhance the functional impact of excitatory synapses in firing an action potential and mediate metaplasticity that is a persistent change in the ability to induce subsequent synaptic plasticity. These effects could account for the well-known actions of cannabinoids on learning and memory.
